Beckley

City and administrative headquarters of Raleigh County in southern West Virginia, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Charleston; population (2000) 17,300. It is a commercial centre for the region. Industries produce mining machinery and electronic devices, processed foods, and lumber.

Beckley was settled in 1838, in a fertile valley. It expanded after 1890, when ‘smokeless’coal was first shipped, and grew rapidly when the Winding Gulf coalfield opened in 1907. Beckley College was founded here in 1933.
