Becquerel, Antoine César (1788-1878)

French physicist who pioneered the study of electrochemistry. As the grandfather of Henri Becquerel, he was the first of several generations of distinguished scientists in the Becquerel family.

Becquerel was born at Chauntilon-sur-Loing. After joining the army, he served in the French in Spain in 1810 before being appointed to the Ecole Polytechnique in 1814. He then left the army to study, with André Ampère and Jean Baptiste Biot, magnetism, electroconductivity, and electrochemistry. In 1837 he was made professor of physics at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle.
