Looking north along the banks of the river Glaslyn to the foothills of Snowdon. The white houses mark the village of Beddgelert, in the county of Gwynedd. Between the river and the village lies the grave of Gelert, a gallant dog that, according to legend, saved the baby son of Prince Llewelyn I from a wolf.

Village in Gwynedd, northwest Wales, 20 km/12 mi southeast of Caernarfon; population (2001) 800. Lying at the foot of Snowdon (1,085 m/3,560 ft), the village is close to the pass of Aberglaslyn. Its name means ‘grave of Gelert’. Gelert was the hound of Llewelyn I (Prince of Wales in the 13th century) and his grave is marked by a stone recalling the legend that he saved his master's child from a wolf and was then killed by Llewelyn in error.

The nearby Sygun copper mine is open to tourists. The pass of Aberglaslyn contains the rock known as the ‘chair of Rhys Goch’ (the 15th-century bard).
