Bedford, Steuart (1939– )

English conductor. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London before making his debut at the Sadler's Wells Theatre, in 1967, with the English Opera Group; he toured with the group in Europe and the USA. He was artistic co-director of the English Music Theatre (formerly the English Opera Group) 1975–80, and conducted first performances of Britten's Death in Venice (1973) and Phaedra (1976), both at Aldeburgh. He arranged the suite from Death in Venice (1984).
