Liberty Island

Rocky island in New York Harbor, USA, the site since 1886 of the 92-m/302-ft Statue of Liberty. The island is uninhabited. It is 40 sq km/15 sq mi, and lies 4 km/2.5 mi south of Manhattan Island, with which it is connected by ferry. Until 1956 the island was called Bedloe's Island, after Isaac Bedloe, who had bought it in the 17th century. In 1965 Ellis Island became part of the existing Statue of Liberty National Monument. The combined size of Ellis Island and Liberty Island is 24 hectares/59 acres.

Bedloe's Island was taken over by New York in 1758 and given to the federal government in 1798.

Ellis Island is administered by the National Park Service.
