Beelzebub

In the New Testament, the leader of the devils, sometimes identified with Satan and sometimes with his chief assistant (see devil). In the Old Testament Beelzebub was a fertility god worshipped by the Philistines and other Semitic groups (Baal).

So they called him Beelzebul, a corrupted name of a Philistine god Baal-zebul that probably meant "God of the Heavenly House.
It is interesting that scribes who have come down from Jerusalem acknowledge that there is a power operative through Jesus, but they allege that "he is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out demons" (3:20-27).
