Beit Guvrin

Village in Israel, west of Hebron. The nearby churches of Sandahanna are examples of Roman technique applied to Christian buildings. A fine Roman mosaic of the 3rd century AD has been excavated.

Excavations at the nearby town of Mareshan (Greek Marissa) have revealed painted tombs of the Hebrew period, wall paintings, and rock caverns. The 2nd-century tomb of Apollophanes, with gabled roofs, is said to be the only one of its kind in Israel.
