Békéscsaba

Town in southeast Hungary, near the River Körös, 177 km/111 mi southeast of Budapest; population (2001 est) 66,600. It is the capital of Békés county, an agricultural district of the Alföld (Great Plain). Industries include textiles and food processing. Turks destroyed a settlement on this site in the 16th century, and the present town was founded by Slovaks in the 18th century.
