Bekker, Paul (1882–1937)

German writer on music. He studied in Berlin and was at first a violinist in the Philharmonic Orchestra there. In 1906 he began to devote himself to music journalism and became critic to several papers; he was later operatic manager at Kassel and Wiesbaden. The Nazi regime drove him to the USA. He wrote on Beethoven, Wagner, Mahler, opera, and modern composers, and was a champion of Mahler, Schoenberg, Schreker, and Hindemith.
