Bel Air

Residential area of Los Angeles, California, immediately west of Beverly Hills, in the southern foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, and 18 km/11 mi northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Enormous secluded villas, built from the 1920s, characterize one of the nation's wealthiest communities.

Bel Air

Town and administrative headquarters of Harford County in Maryland, 40 km/25 mi northeast of Baltimore; population (1990 est) 8,900. The area around the town is becoming heavily suburbanized and now includes the communities of Bel Air North (population (1990 est) 14,900) and Bel Air South (population (1990 est) 26,400).

Formerly a market centre, Bel Air was known as Aquila Scott's Old Field until it was chosen as the county seat in 1787. Harford Community College (1957) is here.
