Lugosi, Bela (1884-1956)

Hungarian-born US film actor. Acclaimed for his performance in Dracula on Broadway (1927), Lugosi began acting in feature films in 1930. His appearance in the film version of Dracula (1931) marked the start of Lugosi's long career in horror films - among them, Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Raven (1935), and The Wolf Man (1941).

Trained at the Academy of Theatrical Art in Budapest, Lugosi began his stage career with the Hungarian National Theater. After service in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I, he immigrated to the USA 1921.
