Belcher, Jonathan (1681–1757)| American administrator. He was governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire 1730–41, and of New Jersey from 1746 until his death. |
| Belcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard 1699. As governor, his freedom of thought made him many enemies. The influential people of New Hampshire, who wanted a separate government, were opposed to him, and he was replaced 1741. |
