Belcher, Jonathan

    0.02 sec.

Belcher, Jonathan (1681–1757)

American administrator. He was governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire 1730–41, and of New Jersey from 1746 until his death.

Belcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard 1699. As governor, his freedom of thought made him many enemies. The influential people of New Hampshire, who wanted a separate government, were opposed to him, and he was replaced 1741.
