Belchertown

Town in Hampshire County, central Massachusetts, 32 km/20 mi northeast of Springfield; population (1998 est) 11,950. It is located in an apple-growing and dairy-farming area west of Quabbin Reservoir. Around half a million visitors are attracted to the town and reservoir every year, principally for the hiking and fishing.

Belchertown was first settled in 1731. The Quabbin Reservoir dates from the 1930s and five villages were drowned in its development. An attraction is the Stone House Museum, which is a building from 1827.
