belemnite

Extinct relative of the squid, with rows of little hooks rather than suckers on the arms. The parts of belemnites most frequently found as fossils are the bullet-shaped shells that were within the body. Like squid, these animals had an ink sac which could be used to produce a smokescreen when attacked.
