Bell, Joseph

Bell, Joseph (1837–1911)

Scottish surgeon. He was surgeon to the Royal Infirmary and Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, from 1864, lecturer on clinical surgery from 1879, and editor of the Edinburgh Medical Journal 1873–96. He published a Manual of Surgical Operations and Notes on Surgery for Nurses.

He was the prototype of Conan Doyle's celebrated detective Sherlock Holmes.
