Bellamy, George Anne

    0.24 sec.

Bellamy, George Anne (c. 1727-1788)

English actor. She appeared mainly with David Garrick at Drury Lane, London, and was at her best in romantic and tragic roles.

She was the illegitimate daughter of Lord Tyrawley. Educated at a French convent, she ran away to live with her mother in London, and made her first appearance on the stage in 1744. In later years her scandalous behaviour and a bigamous marriage affected her popularity, but she continued to act intermittently until 1785. An unreliable autobiography, Apology, was published in 1785 on her release from a debtors' prison.
