Belle Glade

City in southeastern Florida, 58 km/36 mi west of West Palm Beach and southeast of Lake Okeechobee; population (2000) 14,900. Dating from the early 1920s, it was devastated by a hurricane in 1928, then rebuilt and incorporated that year. The hub of the largest US sugar cane-producing area, it is also a processing centre for vegetables and cattle.

Home to numerous migrant workers, many Caribbean, its work camps swell the population during sugar and harvesting season. There is also a state prison.
