Belleau Wood

In World War I, US victory over the Germans, June 1918, during the Allied drive to expel the Germans from northern France. After their success at Château-Thierry, US Marines attacked German positions in Belleau Wood 6 June. The Marines spent almost three weeks clearing the wood in the face of strong German defences.

Now, flash forward to 1918 France, World War I and the Battle of Belleau Wood.
The author was assigned to USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) when he wrote this story.
Saipan (LHA 2), decommissioned 20 April 2001 and transferred to the inactive fleet, and Belleau Wood (LHA 3) decommissioned 13 October 2005 and was sunk on 13 July 2006 during a RIMPAC exercise.
