Belleville

Town and administrative headquarters of St Clair County, southwest Illinois; population (1990) 42,800. It is located 30 km/19 mi southeast of East St Louis. The town is at the centre of a coal mining region; it was founded in 1814 and was an agricultural centre until coal was discovered in 1828. Local manufactures include beverages, stoves and heating equipment, stencil machines, beer, bricks, caskets, and clothing. Scott Air Force Base is 10km/6 mi to the east; the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is 8 km/5 mi to the northeast.
