Bellucci, Monica (1968– )

Italian actor and model. Known for her versatility and exotic beauty, she has appeared in numerous Italian, French, and US films. Her breakthrough film role was in the French thriller L'Appartement/The Apartment (1996), and she was critically acclaimed internationally for her title role in Malèna (2000). She achieved a wider audience in the sci-fi blockbusters The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003) and Mel Gibson's successful and controversial retelling of the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus, The Passion of the Christ (2004).

Other films include Doberman (1997), Under Suspicion (2000), Le Pacte des loups/Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), Tears of the Sun (2003), and The Brothers Grimm (2004).

She was born in the village of Città di Castello, Umbria. She attended the University of Perugia, where she studied law and modelled to pay for her tuition. She moved to Milan in 1988, where she joined the Elite modelling agency. After a successful modelling career, appearing in international advertising campaigns for the likes of Dolce&Gabbana, she made her film debut in 1990, appearing in Vita coi figli/Life with the Sons on Italian television. She made her US film debut in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). She married her L'Appartement co-star, French actor Vincent Cassel (1966– ), in 1999.
