Belluno

Capital of Belluno province in Veneto region, northeast Italy, situated on a spur above the River Piave, 80 km/50 mi north of Venice; population (2001) 35,100. There are electrical industries, and furniture is manufactured; local agriculture and tourism in the nearby mountain areas contribute to the town's economy. Belluno was a free city during the Middle Ages, but was annexed by Venice in 1404; most of the old city dates from the period of Venetian rebuilding, including the 16th-century Palladian cathedral.

The artists Sebastino Ricci and Marco Ricci and the philosopher Andrea Alpogo (1430–1520) were born here.
