Belmont County

County in eastern Ohio, bounded by the Ohio River at the West Virginia border; area 1,391 sq km/537 sq mi; population (1990) 71,100. Its capital is St Clairsville. Bellaire, Bridgeport, and Martins Ferry are manufacturing centres. The rest of the county is largely rural, with coal mining, limestone quarrying, and diversified agriculture (dairy, fruit, grain, tobacco, and market gardening).
