Belo Horizonte

Industrial city and capital of Minas Gerais federal unit (state) in southeast Brazil; population (2000) 2,238,500; metropolitan area (2005 est) 5,391,500. It stands on a plateau 823 m/2,700 ft high, surrounded by the Sierra do Espinhaço mountain range, and is the centre of a mining and agricultural district. Industries include steel, engineering, textiles, and cement. Gold, diamonds, and manganese are mined nearby and are processed in Belo Horizonte.

Belo Horizonte superseded Ouro Preto as state capital in 1897, and was Brazil's first planned modern city, built on the site of the village of Curral del Rei; it is now the third-largest city in the country. There are two universities.
