Beloit

City in Rock County, southeast Wisconsin; population (1994 est) 36,600. It is situated on the Rock River, 65 km/40 mi southeast of Madison105 km/65 mi southwest of Milwaukee. Beloit's industries include the manufacture of papermaking and woodworking machinery, diesel engines, electric motors and generators, pumps, and tools. The city is also a commercial centre for the fertile farming and dairying area that surrounds it. The city is the home of Beloit College (1846).

Beloit was settled in 1837 by the New England Emigrating Company, and incorporated in 1856.
