Beltrami, Giulio Cesare (1779–1855)

Italian traveller, born in Bergamo. He was connected with the Carbonari revolutionary society, and as a result had to leave Italy for America in 1821. He accompanied Major Long on an expedition in 1823, and the following year became the first European to find the sources of the River Mississippi. He published La Découverte des sources du Mississippi/Discovery of the sources of the Mississippi in New Orleans in 1824.
