Belvidere

City and administrative headquarters of Boone County in north-central Illinois, 19 km/12 mi east of Rockford, on the Kishwaukee River; population (1990) 16,000. The main contributor to the local economy is a large Chrysler car assembly plant.

Belvidere was settled in 1836 and soon became an important stop on the Chicago–Galena stagecoach route. It also served as an agricultural trading centre and a shipping point for Chicago-bound milk and grain. The Pettit Chapel, designed (1907) by the US architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is in the Belvidere Cemetery.

I know it, sir; a young man, who still adheres to my fallen fortunes, passes a part of his time in a belvidere at the top of the house, in hopes of being the first to announce good news to me; he has informed me of the arrival of this ship.
