Belzoni

Belzoni

City and administrative headquarters of Humphreys County in eastern central Mississippi, 53 km/33 mi southwest of Greenville, just west of the Yazoo River; population (1990) 2,500. It is a leading US catfish farming centre.

Laid out in 1827, it was named after an Italian archaeologist who was a friend of its founder. It was formerly a cotton and lumber processing centre.
