Bem, Jozef (1794–1850)

Polish general. He took part in the Polish rebellion against Russia 1830–31. In 1848 he joined the Hungarian nationalist rebellion and distinguished himself in Transylvania against the Austrians and Russians. Forced to flee to Turkey in 1849, he served in the Turkish army as Amurat Pasha, after having converted to the Muslim faith.
