Bemba

A people native to northeastern Zambia and neighbouring areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and Zimbabwe. They number about 3 million, many residing in urban areas such as Lusaka and Copperbelt. The Bemba language belongs to the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo family.

Traditionally they are divided into clans in which descent is traced through the mother. They are led by paramount chiefs and other leaders with spiritual and religious powers. Originally shifting cultivators, today many work in the Zambian copper mines. The Bemba played an important role in the Zambian nationalist movement.
