Bemidji

City and administrative headquarters of Beltrami County in northwestern Minnesota, 225 km/140 mi northwest of Duluth, on the Mississippi River, where it flows through Lake Bemidji; population (2000) 11,900. It is a trading centre for the region's wood and dairy products. Products include boats, pipes, and building materials, and tourism is important.

Settled in 1866, it was originally a trading post and became a major lumbering centre in the 1890s. Bemidji State University (1919) is here. Tourists are attracted by nearby lakes and the Mississippi headwaters, Buena Vista, Blackduck, and Paul Bunyan state forests.
