Bendl, Karel (1838-1897)

Bohemian composer and conductor. After various posts in foreign countries as a conductor he worked in Prague from 1865 to 1878 and from 1881. He gave much encouragement to Dvořák. His works, partly in a traditional style and partly influenced by Smetana, include eleven operas, choral and orchestral works, and church and chamber music.
