Benedict XV (1854–1922)

Pope 1914–22. He made several ineffective attempts to bring about peace during World War I, interceded with the French and German governments for the exchange of prisoners of war, and was instrumental in stopping the pro-German propaganda of the Carlist Roman Catholics in Spain.

During his pontificate the British government, for the first time for centuries, accredited a diplomatic representative to the Vatican and the French government resumed diplomatic relations after a lapse of nearly 20 years.

Giacomo della Chiesa abandoned a legal career and was ordained in 1878. In 1885 he went to Madrid as private secretary to the nuncio, Cardinal Rampolla. From 1889 to 1907 he was in the secretariat of state, first under Rampolla and then under Cardinal Merry del Val. He was appointed archbishop of Bologna in 1907, created cardinal in May 1914, and three months later was elected pope.
