Benevento

Historic town in Campania, southern Italy, situated at the principal crossing place over the Apennines, 55 km/34 mi northeast of Naples; population (2001) 61,800. The town produces Strega liqueur, machinery, leather goods, and confectionery. There is a Roman theatre, and a triumphal arch of the Emperor Trajan, built in AD 114.

Benevento was the chief city of the ancient Samnite people, who were involved with a series of wars with Rome from 343 BC; the city was finally taken by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The Romans defeated Pyrrhus, king of Epirus, near here in 275 BC. It was the capital of the duchy of the Lombards from 571 to 1038. At the Battle of Benevento in 1266, Charles of Anjou defeated Manfred, then king of Naples and Sicily, and claimed the kingship. In 1806 Napoleon I made his foreign minister Talleyrand-Périgord the prince of Benevento.
