Benevoli, Orazio

Benevoli, Orazio (1605–1672)

Italian composer. He held appointments at the churches of San Luigi de' Francesi and Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the former with an interruption 1644–46, when he was at the Austrian court in Vienna. In 1646 he became maestro di cappella at the Vatican.

Works

Masses, motets, and other church music, much of it for several choirs in a large number of parts. The celebrated 53-part Missa salisburgensis formerly attributed to him, is probably by Biber.
