Annual leguminous plant (see legume), grown for food in India and the Middle East. Its short hairy pods contain edible seeds similar to peas. (Cicer arietinum, family Leguminosae.)

I have never been to the Old Delhi Railway Station without succumbing to the temptation of digging the uniformly round pooris accompanied by the Purani Dilli favourite--watery aloo ki sabzi spiked with Bengal grams.
Soybeen, Bengal gram (kale chane), fruits like apple, figs, guava, lemon and orange are rich in fibre.
The sambar contains tamarind, red gram dal plus seasonings and spices; and the chutney's main ingredients are fried gram, coriander leaves, coconut, chilies, ginger, salt mustard, bengal gram dal and curry.
