Benguet

Province of northern Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 2,655 sq km/1,025 sq mi; population (1995) 541,000. The capital is La Trinidad. The province is very mountainous (containing Mount Pulog, the second highest mountain in the Philippines), with an important timber industry, and there is a major hydroelectric scheme in the highlands. Rice is grown, and copper and gold are mined. Tourism is important. The most important town is Baguio, the former capital of the province.

Benguet is home to the Ibaloy, Kankana-ey, and Kalanguya peoples. Benguet became a full province in 1968. An earthquake in 1990 caused serious damage in the province.
