Beni Suef

Capital of Beni Suef governorate, central Egypt, 100 km/62 mi southwest of Cairo; population (1992 est) 179,000. It is situated on the west bank of the River Nile, and is a trading centre for the governorate of Faiyum. Beni Suef has cotton mills, alabaster quarries, and sugar refineries.
