Benioff zone

Benioff zone

Seismically active zone inclined from a deep sea trench. Earthquakes along Benioff zones apparently define a lithospheric plate that descends into the mantle beneath another, overlying plate. The zone is named after Hugo Benioff, a US seismologist who first described this feature.
