Bennett, John Hughes (1812–1875)

English pathologist. He gave the first definite description of the blood disease leukaemia and drew attention to the medicinal value of cod-liver oil.

He was born in London and educated at Exeter and Edinburgh, then studed for four years in Paris and Germany. In 1841 he began to lecture on histology in Edinburgh, and from 1843 to 1874 was professor of the institutes of medicine at Edinburgh, publishing numerous treatises on medicine.
