Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Bennett, Michael (1943–1987)

US dancer, choreographer, stage director, and producer. Bennett's first show was A Joyful Noise (1966); but his first great success was with Promises, Promises (1968), which won eight Tony awards. Bennett is credited with having re-invented the American musical, and was often called in as a ‘show doctor’ to save ailing productions. He conceived the musical, A Chorus Line, after working with a group of chorus dancers, and the show went on to become the longest running on Broadway.
