Gozzoli, Benozzo (c. 1421–1497)Florentine painter. He is known for his fresco The Procession of the Magi (1459–61) in the Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence, where the walls are crowded with figures, many of them portraits of the Medici family.

Some problems familiar to Renaissance scholars will be revisited in this exhibition: The relation of Fra Angelico to the art of book illumination, the division of labor between Angelico and followers such as Zanobi Strozzi and Benozzo Gozzoli, and the vexed question of his early work. Eckart Marchand's essay examines the representation of "patrons, their families and allies" in a small group of Quattrocento frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. The latter case is, by extension, articulated in a contract of 1461 for Benozzo Gozzoli to paint saints with their "suitable and usual" costumes and "usual decorations. |
