Benson

City in southeastern Arizona, 64 km/40 mi southeast of Tucson; population (2000) 4,700. Local industries include livestock and poultry raising, dairying, bronze casting and fertilizers. Copper mines in the Dragoon Mountains provide some employment. Benson is a transportation hub and tourist gateway for southeast Arizona, and a commuter town for Tuscon. Benson municipal airport opened in December 1999.

Originally a stagecoach stop, Benson developed after the arrival of the railway in 1880. Nearby, at the base of the Whetstone Mountains, are the Kartchner Caverns, a limestone cave system with 4 km of underground passages. They were discovered in 1974 and opened to the public as part of Kartchner Caverns State Park in November 1999.
