Benson, Ambrosius

    0.01 sec.

Benson, Ambrosius (died 1550)

Netherlandish painter. A little-known figure, identified only in the 20th century, he was a painter of religious subjects and portraits in the style of Gerard David. Works signed with his monogram AB include the Deipara Virgo (Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp) and a portrait of Baron Hastings (Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels).

Probably a native of Lombardy, Benson was elected to the Guild of St Luke (painters) in Bruges 1519. A number of his pictures are in Spain, especially Segovia, which is why he was once known as the Master of Segovia.
