Benton

City and administrative headquarters of Saline County in central Arkansas, 32 km/20 mi southwest of Little Rock, near the Saline River; population (1990) 18,200. Light industry since World War II has included aluminium production based on local bauxite (the richest US deposits).

Originally settled in 1815 on the Missouri–Texas Military Road, the city was involved in salt mining, pottery making, and logging.
