Benton Harbor

City in Berrien County, southwest Michigan, on the Saint Joseph River at its mouth on Lake Michigan, 110 km/68 mi northeast of Chicago; population (1990) 12,800. Industries include iron compressors and other metal products, and food processing.

The city was named after the American painter, Thomas Hart Benton. It was incorporated as a city in 1891. The headquarters of the Whirlpool Corporation is in the city, which also manufactures boats, wood and paper products, hardware, furniture, and welding equipment. It has long been the centre of a tourist region that features abundant beaches and mineral springs. The city is the home to Lake Michigan College (1946).
