Bentonville

City and administrative headquarters of Benton County in northwestern Arkansas, 35 km/22 mi north of Fayetteville, in the Ozark Plateau; population (2000) 19,700. It cans fruits and vegetables, mills lumber, and is a distribution centre for dairy products, grapes, apples, berries, and poultry.

It was established in 1837 and named after the Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton (1782–1858). It gained an economic rival in 1881 with the founding of Rogers to the southeast.

Sam Walton, founder of the Wal-Mart drug and discount chain, was born here in 1918.

Bentonville

Hamlet in central North Carolina, 27 km/17 mi southwest of Goldsboro. A monument here commemorates the largest battle of the American Civil War in North Carolina, fought on 19 March 1865. William T Sherman's Union forces defeated Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee, on Sherman's march north from Savannah.
