Bentonville

City and administrative headquarters of Benton County in northwestern Arkansas, 35 km/22 mi north of Fayetteville, in the Ozark Plateau; population (2000) 19,700. It cans fruits and vegetables, mills lumber, and is a distribution centre for dairy products, grapes, apples, berries, and poultry.

It was established in 1837 and named after the Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858). It gained an economic rival in 1881 with the founding of Rogers to the southeast.

Sam Walton, founder of the Wal-Mart drug and discount chain, was born here in 1918.

Bentonville

Hamlet in central North Carolina, 27 km/17 mi southwest of Goldsboro. A monument here commemorates the largest battle of the American Civil War in North Carolina, fought on 19 March 1865. William T Sherman's Union forces defeated Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee, on Sherman's march north from Savannah.
