Danish composer. He studied piano with his mother and composition with Knud Christian Jeppesen (1892–1974).

Opera

four operas, including Faust III (after Goethe, Kafka, and Joyce; 1964).

Orchestral

15 symphonies (1942–80); eight piano concertos, four violin concertos.

Chamber

much chamber music, including a chamber concerto for 11 instruments, chamber symphony, nine string quartets (1940–76), sonata for solo cello, 11 piano sonatas, Propostae Novae for two pianos.

Vocal

Bonjour Max Ernst, cantata for chorus and orchestra (1961), and other vocal music.
