Benxi

Industrial city in Liaoning province, northeast China, 70 km/43 mi southeast of Shenyang; population (1994) 1,493,300. Steel production accounts for two-thirds of the city's total industrial output (by value, 1994) and is closely integrated with the iron and steel complex at Anshan.

There was a small iron industry in Benxi in the Liao dynasty (947–1125), but full-scale development started in the late 19th and early 20th century with the mining of local coal and with the Japanese industrialization of Manchuria to serve their munitions industry. In 1997 measures were taken to reduce air pollution.
