benzyl bromide| Lachrymatory (tear) gas first used by the Germans at Verdun March 1915. It is a powerful eye irritant, and high concentrations also effect the nose and throat. |
| Its prime component was toluene, more urgently needed for the manufacture of explosives, and since other substances of greater power were later discovered, benzyl bromide was not used for very long. It was also used by the French as Cyclite. |
