Beppu

Beppu

City lying on Beppu Bay in Oita prefecture, Japan, in the northeast of Kyushu island; population (1995 est) 128,300. A tourist base for the Aso and Seto Naikai National Parks, Beppu features 3,795 hot springs, and is famous for its boiling mud ponds. It attracts 13 million visitors a year. Other features include its ryokan (traditional inns), and the nearby Mount Tsurumi, Lake Shidaka, and Kijima plateau. Beppu is also a centre for research into volcanic activity.
